The National Art School occupies the grounds of the former Darlinghurst Jail, which is the oldest surviving large jail complex in Australia. Recent refurbishments of the National Art School Building 11 have breathed new life into this important historic building. The project has returned the building to its intended three stories, and now houses a metalwork/woodwork workshop, various project display areas, sculpture studios, many individual artist studios, a humidity-controlled area for archiving and storing the NAS Collection, a media lab and lecture room. The building also houses numerous meeting, administration and amenity areas.

Reinstatement, conservation and adaptive reuse of the original 1859 four room residential cottage to a café. The works involved significant restoration of foundations, timber flooring, walls, timber ceilings, wrap around veranda and building façade.

The house has local historical significance, originally built in 1859, Southridge House was then called Herguilliers by the original early French migrant Moise Roussel. It was renamed Southridge in 1919 by Frederick Bigg, whose family raised cattle and pigs on the site. The estate was sold to Penfolds Winery in 1950 and the winemaker lived in the house. Today, Southridge House is the centrepiece of Southridge Plaza that services an industrial business park in Sydney’s West and offers local workers a convenient retail hub.

The works included the construction of four new floors within the existing envelope.

Behind the Tremayne Building was a three-story hostel which was converted into staff offices and additional art rooms for the school.
